AvtoVAZ refused to produce the popular Renault Duster cars in Russia under the Lada brand due to unavailability of components. AvtoVAZ First Vice President for Strategy and Technical Development Evgeniy Shmelev spoke about this. reports “Russian newspaper”.
According to Shmelev, most Renault Duster crossovers were sold in Russia with an all-wheel drive modification, but it turned out to be impossible to prepare the same modification on our own by organizing the supply of components.
“We quickly realized we couldn’t make the all-wheel-drive Duster; Either everything was clogged or in danger of clogging. According to statistics, more than 90% of Duster sales in Russia were for the all-wheel drive version. Therefore, it made no sense to make a Duster without all-wheel drive only in the form of a light crossover, dragging all the equipment and investing in further replacement of components,” Shmelev explained.
It was announced in May last year that AvtoVAZ could start production of Lada Duster. said Denis Pak, who later served as head of the automotive industry and railway engineering department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. Maxim Sokolov, later president of AvtoVAZ explainedIt was stated that it was quite risky to continue production of the model due to the low localization of Duster and the high proportion of components included in the sanctions lists.
