The Russian government has instructed the Ministry of Industry and Trade to tighten requirements for car seats and “child restraint systems” due to the increase in the number of accidents involving children in the country. In this respect reports “Kommersant”.
It is stated that lawmakers, together with the State Traffic Inspectorate, are also working on changes that would eliminate the possibility of using any spare car seats. The Ministry of Industry and Trade will work on its proposals for tightening the conditions until November 15.
The real problem, according to the publication, lies in the various “corrections and adapters” for seat belts that are sold in stores and are much cheaper than car seats. However, cheap alternatives cannot hold the child in case of an accident.
According to current traffic regulations in Russia, a child under the age of seven must be transported in a car equipped with a child restraint system. Children aged seven to 11 years can be transported using standard seat belts if the passenger’s height and weight allow. The penalty for violating the rules is three thousand rubles. In January-September 2023, 13.5 thousand traffic accidents with victims under 16 years of age occurred in Russia; This figure is 10% more than the same period last year. Of that number, 910 were caused by children traveling in a car without a car seat.
