A court in the United States sentenced a Vermont resident to four years in prison after he managed to get possession of five Tesla cars without paying for them. In this respect reports Market Watch.

Michael Gonzalez discovered a loophole in the Tesla car ordering system in 2018 when he made an advance payment of $2.5 thousand (₽243.3 thousand) for a Tesla Model 3 priced at $58 thousand (₽5.6 million). The car provided the company with account details for which there were insufficient funds. Despite this, he was delivered a new car and documents that allowed him to register the car in his name.

Three months later, he sold the car for $42,000 (₽4 million) and then bought four more Tesla Model Xs in the same manner, worth $150,000 (₽14.6 million) each. He also mentioned the details of his girlfriends as buyers of two cars. The attacker was only exposed after he set fire to one of the cars to get insurance. The total cost of the stolen cars was $560 thousand (₽54.5 million). As part of the plea agreement, the defendant agreed to refund $493 thousand (₽48 million) to Tesla.
