Rupert Stadler, former CEO of German automaker Audi, has been sentenced to probation and fined 1.1m euros as part of an investigation into the company’s deliberate underreporting of diesel engine emissions. In this respect informs Automotive News Europe.
Under the so-called “Dieselgate”, Stadler became the first executive of the Volkswagen Group to receive such a penalty. According to the court decision, a fine of 1.1 million euros will be sent to the state budget and non-governmental organizations. Volkswagen Group admitted to using illegal software to cheat emissions tests in 2015. Stadler has been accused by US authorities of failing to stop sales of low-emission cars in Europe even after the fraud was uncovered.
Wolfgang Hatz, the former head of engine development at Audi, received a two-year suspended sentence and a 400,000 euro fine, while his colleague Giovanni Pamio was sentenced to a 50,000 euro fine and a suspended year and 9 months in prison.
