Signs of a fake VIN number of the car are the uneven thickness of the paint in the area where the number is stamped, as well as the uneven edges of the numbered polymer marking plate. This was told socialbites.ca by the head of the Avtocriminalist expert center Maxim Shelkov.

“If the car enthusiast has a caliper, you can check the surface around the VIN for color uniformity. On the adjacent panel, next to the markings, it is necessary to measure the thickness a few centimeters from them. The thickness should be uniform,” Shelkov explained.

If you are familiar with the shape of the automaker’s fonts, you may also notice the difference in the font used for the fake. The specialist noted that the polymer marking plate should not have tears and air bubbles, and its shape should be perfectly even, since the factory plates are stamped, and fakes can be cut with scissors.

“The polymer plates are glued with an adhesive composition with a luminescent glow. If in the rays of an ultraviolet flashlight you see that the plate is not mounted along the contour, we can conclude that it is re-glued, ”Shelkov explained.

A metal plate with a VIN number is usually removed from another car along with rivets and attached to a stolen car by attackers. At the same time, a metal core pierces the rivet, and its absence should alert the person choosing a car, Shelkov gave for example.

Earlier, Maxim Shelkov in an interview with socialbites.ca judicial Simple ways to check for crime in the car.
