Outwardly, Mitsubishi Xpander even resembles Lada with elements of X-design invented by Steve Mattin. In the new reality, it can rightfully be considered a replacement for Lada Largus. Wherever you look, the same approach can be found everywhere, although there is no relationship between these machines.
However, this is not a purely Japanese model.
Xpander, like its direct competitors Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Rush (you can also buy them in Russia), is made for the countries of Southeast Asia and is produced there.
Similar concept
The expander is the same Largus in concept and layout. This is a high and spacious station wagon in compact dimensions.
According to Asian specifications, the seven-seater is already in the basic version. In the second row it is very spacious (although for three people it “presses” in width), in the third row adults can ride for a couple of hours.
Here’s the clearance!
There are two versions in the range. The regular Xpander differs from the Xpander Cross variant in the lack of an unpainted body kit and ground clearance.
The “off-road” car is so high that I immediately dove down with a tape measure. I measured 225mm – an off-road indicator!
Until now, pre-styling Expanders have been imported into Russia. After a recent update, the ground clearance of the standard configuration has overtaken the “cross”.
Behind the Xpander can be confused with the Outlander.
Simple and safe
“Grey” cars are warranted by the dealer rather than the manufacturer. The phenomenon is new to us, so nobody knows how it will work. In such conditions, it is better to buy a car that is extremely simple and unpretentious. And the Xpander Cross is awesome.
The engine here is a one and a half liter aspirated MIVEC with an output of 105 hp, known from the once super popular Lancer X.
The machine is also well deserved and reliable, but only 4 gears. Gasoline consumption in a car with such a power unit will not be modest. But in terms of reliability, this bundle does not disappoint.
The dashboard is simplicity itself. The plastic is cheap and hard, but the build quality is good.
Reasonable sufficiency
The Asian Mitsubishi is not well equipped, but the usual comfort and safety systems are still there.
There is ESP, two pillows, a multimedia system with a rear view camera, air conditioning, electrical accessories, alloy wheels, light and rain sensors.
An attribute of luxury and a sign of a 2020s car is an all-LED headlight.
Heating and price
Two things are confusing when compared to Largus.
First, the Xpander is not equipped with heated front seats in some trim levels. It is not difficult to retrofit a car with it, but this is an additional expense. And the windscreen, rear seat and steering wheel are certainly not heated. Although competitors are already actively offering it. The fact that the seats are trimmed with “warm” velor can serve as a comfort.
An armrest is provided on the second row of seats, which is also a hatch for long lengths. The seat halves are adjustable in length.
Secondly, Mitsubishi will cost 2.1-2.5 million rubles. According to the current price level – “in the market.” But for most Russians it is still very expensive. And there are no conditions to get cheaper.
Although Largus, when it returns in the spring, is unlikely to be cheaper than 1.5 million rubles. And that’s how much the basic kit costs. So, with a well-equipped VAZ station wagon, the difference is smaller than it might seem at first glance.
