In winter, skidding often leads to accidents with various consequences. If you have rear-wheel drive, how do you prevent the car from losing control? declares specialist “Behind the wheel” Maxim Gomyanin.
Slippage on the rear-wheel drive occurs when the driver presses sharply on the gas when cornering, for example. The drive wheels start to slip and the rear axle tends to catch up with the front axle. Fighting a skid makes sense until you’ve turned 180 degrees.
According to Gomyanin, you need to turn the steering wheel in the direction of skidding and smoothly release the gas. Don’t slam on the brakes – it will only get worse. The steering wheel must be ahead of the turn, because after the first slip, the car can be carried in the second and third. This situation is called rhythmic drift. The price of an error is a departure into a ditch or into the oncoming lane.
