The railway workers have been sounding the alarm for a long time. In 2020, there were 204 level crossing accidents, injuring 95 people. In 2021, despite the increase in fines, there were even more accidents: 133 people were injured in 219 accidents.

Well-known traffic lights do not always help: a number of motorists do not notice the prohibition signal due to fatigue or bad weather conditions. Someone tries to slip out at the last minute.

What is smart moving?

This is an intelligent complex built on the basis of a complex of photo-video recordings of a combined type. “Smart crossing” automatically monitors railway crossings – regardless of the time of day and weather conditions.

Efficient working at night is ensured by a video surveillance camera with infrared illumination and a radar based on microwave technologies. If the computer system detects a stationary object on the track, it immediately determines its type and gives an alarm signal to the driver and dispatcher, which in many cases makes it possible to stop the rolling stock and avoid a tragedy.

Made especially for railways “Smart crossing” Volga factory “Meteor” of the company “Ruselectronics” Rostec.

Expert Commentary

Existing equipment does not have to be thrown away

“The equipment can be integrated with automation used on the track. Implementation of the “Smart crossing” system is possible on the main transport routes of railways, as well as on internal infrastructures of railways and industrial enterprises. Both on new crossings and on existing ones. The software and hardware complex can be installed in place of existing pedestrian crossings with barriers or without barriers.

Is the driver warned?

In the current version of the train implementation, Smart Crossing warns the drivers of the approaching train with a bright prohibition sign projected onto the roadway.

In the near future, the developers plan to “learn” the intelligent system to inform the driver of the danger in advance. Information about the level crossing blocking traffic may be passed on to the navigation system, allowing the driver to rebuild the route in time.

In addition, some configurations of the “Smart Moving” will include additional mechanical protection that prevents the car from leaving the road – a kind of analog of the existing ascending barriers.

Trial samples of the complex may appear at Russian Railways infrastructure facilities as early as 2023.
