A serious hazard for drivers when driving in severe frost is an unreliable battery, lack of backup fuses and large amounts of snow on the wheel arches and inappropriate diesel fuel. Mikhail Kolodochkin, an expert at Za Rulem magazine, told socialbites.ca about this.

“The battery is old or dead, and even if you manage to start the engine after parking, it may not have enough energy to start the car after stopping on the road. In the cold, a single battery practically does not charge, but only gives charge, ”explained Kolodochkin.

The specialist stated that the engine compartment must be warmed up in order for the vehicle battery to start charging, and this is not always possible in severe frosts and short trips. Another problem that occurs in cold weather is the freezing of washer fluid in the nozzles, which is typical for an isopropyl alcohol-based “antifreeze” allowed for sale in Russia. Unlike banned methanol, isopropanol becomes very viscous when cold and doesn’t clear the glass, he added.

“If the vehicle is diesel, there is a danger of refueling with summer diesel, which is not prohibited to be sold in winter. It makes sense for owners of such cars to refuel at proven gas stations, including where large trucks refuel, ”advised Kolodochkin.

A large amount of snow on the wheel arches can prevent the driver from maneuvering at the right time. In addition, in severe cold conditions, it would be beneficial for the driver to have spare fuses with the driver in order to replace the fuse in case the fuse blows due to the wipers sticking to the windshield.

Earlier it became known that traffic police inspectors on the Surgut-Salekhard highway rescued a married couple who had an accident. spent an hour and a half on the broken gazelle in the forty-degree frost.
