Installations “Tornado-S” began to load with new missiles. This MLRS was already superior to foreign counterparts, including the American HIMARS, and now has new features.
The development of a new line of ammunition for the Tornado-S has been completed, which has already begun to be delivered to the troops in the zone of the special operation.
The accuracy of hitting missiles has increased and the warhead has become much more powerful. Two new radio-controlled missiles can hit any target at a distance of more than 100 km. At the same time, missiles from one salvo can be directed at several targets and hit point by point, not carpet bombing.
Confidence that the target will be hit is given by the fact that the Tornado-S with new missiles hits 15-20 times more accurately than the seven Smerch MLRS.
“They have a longer firing range, a more powerful warhead and more missile options,” military expert Dmitry Boltenkov told Izvestia. – The task of the Tornado is to work on the most important targets, both in the tactical and operational depth of defense, at distances beyond the reach of cannon artillery. We must continue to saturate the troops with such systems so that even the division commander can immediately “order” an attack in the interest of his unit to the maximum depth.”
MLRS “Tornado-S” was developed at JSC “Scientific and Production Association” named Splav “A. Ganichev, and is produced by the Special Design Bureau (SKB). It has been in operation since 2019.
Outwardly, the new MLRS hardly differ from their predecessors: a 12-missile launcher is installed on the MAZ-543M chassis. An additional cabin for the commander is mounted for this – it protrudes slightly above the driver’s cabin.
Also, the novelty can be distinguished by antennas, thanks to which the MLRS becomes part of the battery and can receive external target designations. The missiles are guided to targets using the GLONASS satellite navigation system. To prepare for shooting, the crew does not have to leave the car.
