On December 17, 1801, English inventor Richard Tretiwick first rode the Puffing Devil. It was the first road locomotive to be powered by a steam engine.

On Christmas Eve, the car was carrying six passengers down Four Street and then up Camborne Hill.

Three days later the car broke down. The operators went to a tavern to drink and eat roast goose. The fire in the furnace burned, the steam boiled away, and as a result, only charred fragments of the Puffing Devil remained. The steam car invented by Tretiwick did not find application – it was more expensive and slower than horses. But his developments were used by other inventors.

In the video you can see a modern reconstruction of that first steam engine.
