In winter, snow accumulates on the roads, which eventually turns into ice. The risk of accidents increases and the use of salt and special reagents is not always effective, is financially expensive and has a negative impact on the environment.
As a fight against snow cover and the formation of ice accumulation, scientists from Perm Polytechnic University suggested using the technology of building roads with heating layers.
An extra layer is being placed in the road “sandwich”, including heaters and a network of sensors that monitor the current temperature of the roadway. During construction, it is enough to unwind it from a roll and lay it down.
The system is connected to the weather service in order to react quickly in case of precipitation, depending on this factor the power consumption can vary.
Of course, such roads will not be cheap, but they also have a longer service life: periodic freezing and thawing during the cold season leads to the formation of cracks and potholes. Savings will be made on street cleaning, as it includes not only reagents, but also fuel for road equipment, salaries for drivers and public utilities.
Heating will improve the situation on the roads, there will be fewer accidents in winter and the number of traffic jams due to the accumulation of snowplows will also decrease.
