The development of the TM amphibious tank (Molotov tank) began in 1936 at the Nizhny Novgorod automobile plant.

The power of the available weak engines was clearly not enough, so two GAZ-M1 engines were installed on the tank at once. At the same time, only one of the engines had a generator and a starter – the second was started mechanically from the first.

The negative consequence of this implementation of the twin-engine solution was the actual immobilization of the tank in case of failure of one of the engines.

However, the fate of the light tank did not work out right away: when turning, it constantly tried to get rid of the caterpillar, and on the water it developed a speed of less than 4 km / h.

Well, when calculating the cost of a car, they put an end to it: it is too expensive.

Mikhail Kolodochkin has been collecting unusual facts from the history of technology for many years. Did you know, for example, that an all-terrain vehicle was designed at GAZ in the 1960s that can both fly and swim?
