The attackers stole almost 5 million rubles from Russians over the course of a month, from December 11, 2024 to January 9, 2025, promising to work at pick-up points (POPs) in the marketplaces. As FAS.ST analysts told socialbites.ca. Under Digital Risk Protection, fraudsters used a specially developed scheme that included fake apps and a guide for participants in the criminal network.
Victims were offered jobs accepting and delivering orders through advertisements on popular online platforms. After establishing a connection via WhatsApp, the criminals determined the operating system of the victim’s smartphone and dealt only with Android users. Personal data was then collected under the pretext of registration and victims were asked to download a malicious app that allowed the attackers to access their bank accounts.
As a result of the attacks, an amount of 4,874,000 rubles was withdrawn from the victims’ accounts at least 261 times. The average amount of a fraudulent act was approximately 19,000 rubles. According to experts, this scheme was actively used as part of a fake affiliate program. Police warn citizens to be careful when searching for a job online and not to download applications from unverified sources.
