The Kaliningrad prosecutor’s office announced that the case of hacker Mikhail Matveev, accused of creating a malicious program, was transferred to the court. This was reported by RIA Novosti with source reference.
It is stated that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has offered a reward of 10 million dollars to those who help search for the Russian in the USA.
According to researchers, in January, Matveev developed custom malware to encrypt files and data without users’ knowledge and consent. He planned to use this program to “encrypt data from commercial organizations and then collect a ransom for decryption.”
The hacker is charged under Part 1 of Article 273 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (knowingly creating a computer program for unauthorized destruction, blocking, alteration, copying of computer information or neutralizing means of protecting computer information). He faces up to four years in prison.
Before that, foreign hackers was attacked Library of Congress email. According to Fox News, hackers gained access to correspondence between the library and congressional staff from January to September.
