In 2024, Russia saw a significant increase in DDoS attacks against critical sectors of the economy. StormWall experts analyzed the events that occurred between January and October 2024 and concluded that the total number of attacks increased by 86% compared to the same period last year, according to a press release obtained by socialbites.ca.
The majority of attacks (63%) were carried out by politically motivated hackers, while the proportion of attacks for commercial gain was 26%. Additionally, 10% of the incidents were related to increased competition in cyberspace, and 1% were related to hooliganism.
According to Stormwall research, the three most attacked sectors from January to October 2024 were: telecommunications (31% of total attacks), the public sector (16%) and online retail (14%). Hacktivists aimed to disrupt the work of telecom companies so that they could not provide services to Russian businesses. Recently, attackers have especially frequently attacked regional telecom companies, as these are the most effective attacks.
The public sector, especially the online resources of regional government organizations that suffered the most from DDoS attacks, were also constantly at risk. Additionally, attacks on this online retail sector have increased in 2024 during holidays, sales or important social events.
Among other things, DDoS attacks were detected in other areas: entertainment (9%), finance (8%), education (7%), energy sector (5%), IT sector (4%), manufacturing sector (3%) , logistics sector (2%) and other sectors (1%).
StormWall experts have found a significant increase in the number of DDoS attacks against certain industries this year. During January-October 2024, the number of attacks on telecom companies increased by 173%, the education sector by 64% and online retail by 43% compared to the same period last year. The increase in attacks on the telecom sector is the most obvious, indicating that hackers have chosen this sector as a main target this year.
Experts also noted a slight increase in the number of attacks against other sectors: the number of attacks against the public sector increased by 26%, and the number of attacks against the entertainment sector increased by 18%.
