The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMW) has filed a complaint with the Administrative Hearing Office against Tesla for false advertising of an electric vehicle autonomous driving system. Message about it seen on the PC Mag website. Lawyers representing the department believe that the words and phrases “autopilot” and “fully autonomous driving” used in the company’s promotional materials mislead potential buyers and give them false ideas about safety.
In a statement, DMW asks Tesla to change the description and positioning of the above features when advertising and selling electric vehicles in California. The department specifically asks the company to communicate the limitations of these options as reported on the official Tesla website in promotional materials. Otherwise, DMW will force Tesla to revoke its license to sell cars in the state. In this case, it is stated that the restrictions will not affect the owners of electric cars already sold.
Tesla has 15 days to defend his rights in court. The company has yet to comment on the situation.
The US is not the first country where Tesla has been targeted by authorities for misleading advertisements for autonomous driving. In the summer of 2020, a Munich court banned Elon Musk’s company from using the word “autopilot” in Tesla car ads for the same reasons.
