VTB has detected a new fraud scheme aimed at gaining access to Russians’ accounts on government portals. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
It is stated that fraudsters first ask for a code from an SMS from government portals, under the pretext of sending a registered letter from the tax office, for example. If the user refuses to provide the code, they then call him back under the guise of restoring access to the allegedly compromised account.
Attackers who receive the access recovery code attack the account in the government service. This can lead to serious consequences: loss of personal data, access to banking applications and withdrawal of money from accounts.
According to VTB Senior Vice President Nikita Chugunov, such attacks in hybrid format are quite common and currently account for 30% of the total number of attacks. These programs are especially common during tax season. Citizens are asked not to share their SMS codes and personal data with others and to be careful when receiving suspicious calls.
Previously reportedHe said scammers have started using gift card schemes.
