The UK is considering introducing USB-C as a common charging standard, following the lead of the European Union and India. The UK Product Safety and Standards Agency has begun consultations with manufacturers, importers, distributors and trade associations on the standardization of mobile device charging connectors. about this reports edition of The Register.
If the UK does not adopt USB-C and implements a separate standard, device manufacturers will likely supply adapters rather than releasing separate versions of the devices. The authority believes the introduction of standardized charger requirements for some devices in the UK has the potential to benefit businesses, consumers and the environment.
The European Union gave final approval to legislation making USB-C mandatory and universal for all electronic devices in October 2022. From December 2024, all devices sold in the EU will need to be equipped with a USB-C connector. This decision has Apple opting for the dedicated Lightning port over USB-C with the launch of the iPhone 15 in 2023.
Indian officials also said that the country will follow the EU’s path and make USB-C the standard charging port by March 2025. Laptops in the Indian market will have this charging port from 2026 onwards.
USB Type-C or USB-C is a USB specification for a universal, compact, reversible 24-pin connector for USB devices and USB cables. It has been in use since 2014.
