Video hosting YouTube began to actively block traffic when transferring content from the service to Russian sites. As a result, local streaming platforms are forced to use VPN services to download videos from YouTube. On this subject with reference to RuTube and other sources reports “Kommersant” (“Kommersant”).
RuTube launched the function of streaming content from YouTube in August this year and from VK Video from 2023. RuTube confirmed issues with transferring content from YouTube, explaining that the process usually takes a few hours, but in some cases it takes two to five days.
A RuTube representative said that the service blocks the process from Russian and foreign IP addresses, and the ban usually occurs within 12 hours. VK Video declined to comment and Google did not respond to the request.
Companies are actively using the function of transferring content from YouTube to Russian sites to avoid a blank video player on their website. Bloggers also copy content from VK Video and RuTube, which causes statistics on transferred videos to be inaccurate.
YouTube blocks suspicious activity in two ways: If a video is viewed or downloaded from a notorious IP address that is not a Google account, the video hosting site will respond with a message asking you to sign in. If the viewing was done while you were logged into your account but YouTube believes the account is being used for scraping, it will display a “video unavailable” message.
Some experts doubt that YouTube specifically restricts Russian services and suggest that video hosting has become more active in the fight against video scraping in general.
