Apple’s largest electronics manufacturing partner, Taiwanese company Foxconn, announced large-scale staff hiring at its factory in Zhengzhou (China). How writes Businesskorea plans to hire around 50,000 new workers to meet the planned iPhone 16 production volume in the second half of this year.
The move comes as part of Apple’s ambitious goal of selling 90 million iPhone 16 units by the end of the year, up 10% from a year earlier. Foxconn has proposed raising hourly wages to 25 yuan and bonuses to 7,500 yuan to attract staff, a significant increase from previous proposals. Foxconn’s Zhengzhou factory is the world’s largest iPhone production base and the move underscores the company’s commitment to meeting Apple’s growing shipment targets.
Apple’s sales in the Chinese smartphone market fell 19.1% in the first quarter of this year, likely putting additional pressure on Apple and Foxconn to ensure a successful launch and strong sales of the iPhone 16.
“Historically, Foxconn has faced scrutiny over hiring and working conditions at its Chinese factories. Current efforts to increase staff hiring and wages can be seen as a response to past controversies and an attempt to attract and retain a large workforce to meet production needs,” Businesskorea writes.
