Turkish authorities have decided to lift the ban on access to the previously promoted social network Instagram (its owner, Meta, is recognized as extremist in Russia and is banned) due to the social network’s violation of local legislation. In this regard reports The Hürriyet newspaper cited Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdülkadir Uraloğlu.
According to the minister’s statement, access to Instagram was restored on Saturday at 21:30 local time. This decision was made after talks with representatives of the company that owns Instagram, Meta (known as extremist and banned in Russia), and the parties reached an agreement on compliance with Turkish legislation.
Instagram was previously blocked in Turkey by the Technology and Communications Board on August 2. This happened after the social network blocked condolence messages regarding the killing of Hamas Politburo chairman Ismail Haniyeh.
In talks with Instagram, Turkish authorities stressed that the social network must comply with local norms and traditions, and that it is unacceptable to publish materials that promote violence, suicide, drugs and other substances that are harmful to health. They also agreed to remove accounts and posts belonging to terrorist organizations such as the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and FETÖ, which are banned in Turkey.
Therefore, the lifting of the ban on access to Instagram in Turkey is the result of successful negotiations between the country’s authorities and social network representatives.
