Some Russian telecom operators received a letter from the Federal Security Service (FSB) in which they were asked to ban the use of VoIP accounts from foreign IP addresses and Russian hosting providers. This was reported by RBC With reference to a letter sent to customers from the management of the operator “Quantum”.
The publication writes that the FSB requirement may be due to the fact that customers can now get virtual numbers and rent virtual services to use telephone services. At the same time, renting abroad is cheaper and it is impossible to track traffic through the virtual PBX, which is actively used by scammers.
Hosting providers are also mentioned in the intelligence orders, as they could likely be used to bypass the ban on VoIP from abroad. People can now buy virtual servers from hosts and access them via VPN, but this option will be blocked in the future.
It has previously been reported that some VPN services could pose a danger to users and turn their devices into botnets. More details Material from socialbites.ca.
