Recently, Russia has seen an increase in phone fraud cases, where criminals pose as employees of mobile operators. In this respect reported Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for organizing the fight against illegal use of information and communication technologies through the official Telegram channel “Cyber Police Bulletin of Russia”.
According to experts, fraudsters call citizens and claim that they have received applications to change the mobile phone operator’s phone number. They then ask for a code that must be sent to the phone number, supposedly to change the password on the user’s personal account. Once the victim is handed over to the attackers, he or she is automatically deprived of access to his or her personal account.
As experts note, real employees of mobile operators never ask to dictate SMS codes or transfer personal data to other numbers. The Ministry of Internal Affairs also reminded that telecom company employees only call from special short numbers.
The aim of the fraudsters is to gain access to their victims’ phone data and therefore their personal accounts in online banking.
Russian citizens are asked to be careful and not transfer personal data by phone.
