Checkpoint Research (CPR) experts discoveredHe said that several cybercriminal groups have started using a powerful Android Trojan called Rafel to attack smartphones of popular brands. Owners of Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo and Huawei devices are at risk.
According to cyber threat analysis, Rafel serves as a powerful toolset that provides attackers with the ability to remotely manage and control attacked devices. As a result of the attack, hackers can perform various malicious actions such as stealing data and changing the behavior of the smartphone. Moreover, Rafel allows operators to completely wipe SD cards, delete call logs, intercept notifications, and even act as ransomware.
According to Check Point, approximately 120 different malicious campaigns using this Trojan have been detected. The geography of these actions is impressive: among the organizations attacked were representatives of Russia, the USA, Australia, China, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, New Zealand, Pakistan and Romania.
While most of Rafel’s victims used Samsung smartphones, the second largest group consisted of Xiaomi, Vivo and Huawei device users. At least 87.5% of the hacked devices were running older Android versions that no longer received updates.
