Samsung follows Apple in abandoning driverless car production 12:38

After a decade of trying, Apple recently abandoned plans to create Autopilot, or a fully self-driving electric car. Similar plans have been abandoned by South Korean company Samsung Electronics, which has been much more secretive in its approach to this technology. In this respect reports Business Korean publication.

According to media reports, the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT), which is responsible for the development of autonomous driving systems, has excluded them from its projects. Material and human resources will be directed to robotics. Last year, Samsung testers managed to cover 200 km on public roads in a prototype vehicle equipped with a special autopilot.

Further development of such systems was not deemed appropriate. This is because it requires technical difficulties and serious effort. Moreover, the financial return on such investments remains questionable, especially given that large sums will be invested over a long period of time.

Finally, competition in this field is very high and traditional automakers have higher motivation to succeed in this field. Therefore, it is a natural step for Samsung to give up its goals in this area.
