In Russia, the number of vacancies posted for lawyers specializing in space law has increased by 54% in the last two years. socialbites.ca learned this from a study of the online recruitment platform hh.ru and the educational platform Moscow Digital School, which is part of Ultimate Education.
Experts believe that this growth is associated with the growing interest in astronautics in Russia, the increase in the number of private aerospace companies, the development of the telecom industry and changes in the international political and economic sphere.
“The President of the Russian Federation instructed the government to develop a national project for space development by July 1, 2024. Moreover, according to Rosstat, the turnover of telecommunications companies in Russia increased by 9.7% by the end of 2023, reaching 2.6 trillion rubles. In this context, the demand for lawyers specializing in the legal regulation of space activities is also increasing,” said Nikolai Bychkov, a leading legal consultant in the intellectual property practice of the EDB law firm and an expert at the Moscow Digital School.
Among the requirements for applicants, employers often highlight skills in contract law, full document support experience, knowledge of company law, understanding of tender legislation and copyright law. It is necessary to have the ability to interact with state regulatory authorities, have experience in conducting claims studies, represent the client’s interests in arbitration and courts of general jurisdiction. Lawyers also need to have soft skills such as successful negotiations, effective business communication, and the ability to work in a team.
Space law experts are mostly in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Moscow region. They are in demand in St. Petersburg – they account for the dominant (more than half) share of vacancies compared to other regions. However, in 2023, there was a demand for space law experts in some regions such as Sverdlovsk, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Tver regions, Krasnodar Territory, Altai Republic and Khakas Republic. If two years ago companies in these regions did not show interest in this profession, in 2023 the demand for lawyers who understand the legislation of the space industry has increased by an average of 80%.
