Mobile operator MTS became the first Russian company to install telecommunications equipment at the Antarctic Bellingshausen station, located on King George Island in the Atlantic Ocean. The MTS company told socialbites.ca about this.
A 2G standard base station was installed in the scientific facility. Satellite channels are used to provide communication. According to experts, the equipment was prepared taking into account the climate characteristics of the polar region.
The equipment at the Bellingshausen station was launched as part of a joint project of MTS, the 69th Russian Antarctic Expedition and the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
According to Alexander Solovenchuk, manager of MTS in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, the weather on King George Island is very unstable – precipitation usually falls here in the form of rain and snow. Meteorological and oceanographic observations are carried out at the station all year round, so mobile communications will facilitate interaction when conducting scientific and engineering research. Scientists will also be able to call their families, friends and colleagues.
