Windows 10 and 11 operating system users encountered an unexpected problem after installing a new update. HP Smart app appeared on their computers and all printers were renamed as HP LaserJet M101-M106, the portal reported Windows Latest.
The source of the error is stated to be an error in metadata that affects how printers are recognized and displayed in the operating system. At the end of November, HP submitted updated metadata for its products to Windows Update, but they contained incorrect information. As a result, Windows incorrectly assigned the HP brand to printers from other manufacturers. Moreover, even if this is detected incorrectly, it does not affect the performance of the printers in any way.
Testing performed by WindowsLatest showed that the issue affected all computers receiving the updated metadata. The error does not depend in any way on the PC configuration and printers used. The appearance of the HP Smart application is explained by the fact that Microsoft Store automatically installs the application, assuming that the user has a printer from this company.
Microsoft has now acknowledged the bug, removed the incorrect metadata, and is working with HP to resolve the issue. Maybe another update will be released for Windows in the near future that will fix the metadata bug.
Previously Microsoft suggested Create a single interface for advanced settings in Windows 11.
