Some media outlets in Russia have stopped receiving traffic from the Google Discover recommendation service. The publication writes that the reasons for this are an error in the update of recommendation algorithms or a targeted reduction. RBC Citing sources close to Russian broadcasters.
As explained in the post, this service is built into Google search and allows Chrome browser users on Android devices to see content relevant to their interests. A personalized feed can include news, articles, blogger content, and other content.
According to an RBC source, Discovery blocked the sites of Komsomolskaya Pravda and Tsargrad, which led to a sharp drop in the total number of users visiting their sites. KP indicators fell 2-3 times. Also in the post notes, Zen bloggers started complaining that they were no longer seeing themselves in the recommendations.
According to another source of the publication, the content of Tsargrad and Komsomolskaya Pravda was blocked on Discover immediately after the start of the military operation in Ukraine, but they found opportunities to continue receiving traffic from the service.
Olesya Nosova, editor-in-chief of Komsomolskaya Pravda, told RBC that the publication had many entertainment projects that collected traffic from Discover, but Google banned them a week ago.
According to a Zen representative, the decrease in traffic from Google Discover in the third quarter of 2023 may be due to an update to the aggregator’s algorithms.
