Background: iOS 16 with new lock screen, Macbook Air with M2 chip and new desktop OS with gaming support – what Apple showed at WWDC 2022Apple has been developing its Metal GUI for a long time. This is kind of an analogue of DirectX. And at the recent WWDC 2022 conference, the company showed its new version – Metal 3.
The new version is designed for computers and tablets on the M2 processor. Using the Metal 3 graphics API along with the MetalFX scaling technology makes it possible to run games on the new MacBooks and iPads. In particular, they promised nobody’s air Resident Evil Village and GRID legends.
The technology would enable Resident Evil Village to run at 1080p on the new M2-powered MacBook Air. And Mac Studio (a powerful branded PC on the M1/M2 processor) will supposedly be able to run games in 4K. In general, the developers promise that thanks to Metal 3 and MetalFX it will be possible to run games on all devices with M chips.
Technical aspects of the system have not yet been disclosed, but it appears to be the equivalent of Intel XeSS, NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR. The presentation called “temporal scaling”. This technology means that the system receives not only image data from the current frame, but also from previous frames, which gives the best result. They also talked about spatial scaling, which uses only the current frame. How this will be implemented in practice remains to be seen.
Oddly enough, the M2’s GPU performance is just 3.6 teraflops, less than the Radeon RX 6500 XT. Let’s see how the company can launch games in 4K on such a weak solution.🪄 Attention!
