In 2024, Apple will allow some iPhone users to install applications not only from the App Store but also from third-party sources. In this respect reports The MacRumors publication cites insider and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.
According to Gurman, the new feature will only be available to iPhone users in European Union (EU) countries in order to comply with local laws. The function is expected to be implemented in the first half of 2024. It will allow developers to place their apps exclusively on the App Store. In this way, they will be able to avoid paying 15-30 percent commission to Apple on their revenues.
The new app installation system will be “tightly controlled,” Gurman writes. Other details about the service were not disclosed.
Apple says alternative ways to download apps “undermine the privacy and security” iPhone users rely on. The new system will leave people vulnerable to malware, fraud, data theft and other problems.
“Regardless of its position, Apple must comply with European laws or face fines of up to 20% of its global revenue,” MacRumors writes.
