The Federal Antimonopoly Service will check the fees charged by mobile operators for the distribution of mobile Internet from smartphones for violations of antitrust laws. In this respect informs RBC cites the department representative’s statements.
The FAS reported that the ministry received complaints from Russians about paid distribution of the Internet. As part of the response, the service sent requests to operators to clarify the situation. Currently, the regulator checks the received data for violations of antitrust laws. In the event of a positive result, the FAS promised to take action. The nature of the measures was not specified.
Eldar Murtazin, one of the leading analysts of the Mobile Research Group, claims that one out of every five subscribers in Russia uses Internet distribution from a smartphone. According to him, operators made this function paid in order to generate additional income in conditions where it is forbidden to raise communication tariffs above the inflation level.
In contrast, iKS-Consulting analyst Maxim Savvatin said that the distribution function is not very popular, and according to him, the service prices are not “protective”. At the same time, funds collected by operators can be used for the improvement and maintenance of their infrastructure.
“In the future, I do not rule out the introduction of fees for previously free or shared software options and services,” Savvatin said.
