Chinese law enforcement has detained 22 people suspected of large-scale graphics card fraud. According to the police, the perpetrators bought used video cards, refurbished them and sold them at exorbitant prices and made them look like new. informs videocardz portal.
The operation carried out to apprehend the accused took about a year. During this time, researchers discovered that scammers had specialized in video cards that were previously used for cryptocurrency mining. Thus, they reduced their graphics accelerator purchase costs and increased their profits.
Police also said that the scammers were acting according to a cunning plan by dividing their activities among several groups. That is, one was busy buying video cards, the other – cleaning and retouching devices so that they look like new. The third group of scammers placed video cards in branded boxes, and the fourth group sold them through online stores and social networks.
During a search of the scammers’ warehouse, police confiscated video cards worth approximately $2 million. Seven crimes were charged. It was not reported what punishment awaited them and other participants in the program.
