MIT engineers have developed an ultra-thin, wafer-thin speaker. The device can be mounted on any surface, including a wall, and turned into a sound source.

The column works by the vibration of an ultra-thin membrane that is connected to electricity. The invention turned out to be very energy efficient: 1 m² consumes 100 mW – about 10 times less than a conventional column.

Thin-film speakers have been built before, but for normal use they need to be spaced from another surface so that it doesn’t dampen the vibrations. The new invention is designed in such a way that it can be safely glued anywhere and can be produced in different sizes.

The makers also posted a video in which the column We Are the Champions of Queen plays.
