Zenit’s deputy head coach Anatoly Timoshchuk described the blue-white-blue as the flagship of Russian football, a claim echoed by many supporters of the team.
“A people’s team? I believe Zenit stands as the benchmark of Russian football. It’s clear we have earned five Russian Premier League titles, a record that speaks for itself. There is historical weight behind Spartak, and many fans back that club as well”, Timoshchuk stated.
In the latest league clash, Zenit claimed a 2-1 victory over Krasnodar. Lucas Olaza opened the scoring for Krasnodar in the 16th minute of the first half. Mateo Cassierra answered to level the score shortly after the restart, and with 26 minutes remaining, Arthur sealed Zenit’s win by delivering a precise strike past Matvey Safonov. The encounter concluded with Krasnodar’s Vitor Tormena receiving a red card during stoppage time.
Zenit holds first place in the Russian Championship standings with 47 points, while Krasnodar sits in second place on 43 points.
Earlier, Krasnodar had leveled criticisms at Zenit’s coach, alleging dishonesty, a dispute that added heat to the ongoing rivalry between the clubs.
