The General Secretary of the Russian Football Union, Maxim Mitrofanov, spoke in an interview with Sports Express about FIFA’s stance on the possible return of Russia to world football events under FIFA leadership. He explained that FIFA remains neutral on Russia’s return and that no decision will be taken unilaterally by the federation. Mitrofanov emphasized that FIFA prefers a broad consensus and prefers not to act alone, highlighting that a neutral position is seen as the most prudent course of action for now.

He noted that FIFA’s basic position is to keep all major participants in international football engaged, including Russia, a nation with a deep football tradition and a recent host of the World Cup. Yet, FIFA intends to avoid stepping into the political arena or driving the process by itself. The observer should not expect a rapid or forced move; instead, the federation will wait for a clear turning point before taking a more proactive stance, Mitrofanov suggested.

Historically, in the spring of 2022, FIFA together with UEFA decided to suspend Russia from participation in their sanctioned competitions. Since that suspension, Russian teams have competed only in friendly matches as a way to maintain competition and development during the interim period. This framework has defined the international schedule for Russian football in the aftermath of the suspension.

During 2023, the Russian national team participated in six friendly matches and secured three victories, defeating Iraq and Cuba, and recording a win against Cameroon. The results were seen as a sign of competitive form during a period of international isolation, and they were used in discussions about future opportunities for Russia in international football.

Additionally, there have been media reports mentioning Jurgen Klopp in relation to football opportunities abroad. While speculation circulated about player and coaching career moves, there has been no official confirmation about any concrete proposal or plan to pursue positions abroad, including interests that might involve Barcelona. Stakeholders have urged cautious interpretation of such reports until formal announcements are made by the individuals involved or their clubs.
