The forthcoming continental championship will bring together teams from CONMEBOL and CONCACAF, with the venues for its opening and closing matches already determined.

FIFA’s calendar alignment with the America Cup, modeled after the Eurocup, compelled CONMEBOL to mount a continental competition in 2020 and nudged the planned 2023 edition by a year. As a result, after pandemic delays that saw Brazil host in 2021 and Argentina emerge victorious, the next edition will start in 2024 and will feature participants from beyond South America.

WHERE IT IS PLAYED

In September 2018, the former president of the Ecuadorian Football Federation, Carlos Villacís, stated that Ecuador would oversee the next edition. Since then, leadership within the Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol has changed, and ahead of the 2020 draw, Alejandro Domínguez clarified that Ecuador had submitted a single bid and that the possibility of a multi-country host arrangement was being reviewed. Ultimately, it was confirmed that the United States would host the tournament in collaboration with CONMEBOL and CONCACAF.

An official South American Football Confederation statement dated January 27, 2023 outlined a broad cooperation plan between CONMEBOL and Concacaf. The agreement covers men’s and women’s national team competitions and includes a new club tournament. The Copa América 2024 will take place in the United States during the summer, featuring the ten CONMEBOL teams plus six invited CONCACAF nations as guests. Qualification for Concacaf nations will occur through the 2023/24 Concacaf Nations League. For CONMEBOL, the pact backs men’s national teams’ World Cup preparation with an expanded Copa América that includes six top Concacaf teams, hosted in the region set to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Concacaf will deliver more high-quality matches for its national teams over the next two years, including the 2022/23 Concacaf Nations League, the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup, and the 2023/24 Concacaf Nations League. In women’s football, Concacaf has invited the top four CONMEBOL women’s teams to participate in the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup, with the first edition to be held in the United States. The 12-team event is a cornerstone of Concacaf’s revised women’s calendar. Six CONCACAF nations will enter the 2024 Summer Olympics either directly or through the 2023 W Qualifier, with four invited CONMEBOL teams determined by the results of the 2022 Copa América Femenina. The invited CONMEBOL teams are Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, and Paraguay. A centralized final-four style club competition is planned, featuring the top clubs from both confederations, with two teams from each side, qualifying through ongoing club tournaments and eyeing a 2024 launch. The two presidents, Alejandro Domínguez and Victor Montagliani, emphasized the shared passion and ambition to expand opportunities and raise the level of football across the hemisphere in statements accompanying the agreement.

WHEN WILL IT BE DISPUTED

CONMEBOL announced on social channels that the kickoff is scheduled for June 20 to July 14, aligning with the end of major leagues worldwide. Seven months before the opening match, organizers confirmed the venues for the opener and the final: the competition will begin at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta and conclude at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The opening match of the 2024 edition is slated for Atlanta. Fans can stay informed about Copa América 2024 news and ticket information through official updates from CONMEBOL Copa América sources.
