In most of the world, relegation is decided by the season’s lowest performer. In Colombia, the system is different. La Dimayor altered the traditional format by adopting an average-based method first seen in Argentina during the mid-1980s.
The reasoning mirrors the one offered by Julio Grondona, who helped big clubs avoid a harsh drop after a poor campaign. The key distinction in Colombia is that the last three seasons are averaged to determine relegation.
HOW IS THE DESCENT IN THE BETPLAY LEAGUE DEFINED?
For example, the governing body records the results of the twenty teams in the First Division over the past three years. The calculations consider only matches and points from the All Against phase and use those figures to derive the relegation table.
The league rules specify the following parameters:
To form the 2023 BetPlay DIMAYOR relegation table, the average is computed by dividing the total points earned by the total games played.
Based on these rules, the relegation table includes the following details:
• For Deportivo Boyacá Chicó Fútbol Club SA and Club Deportivo Atlético Huila SA, the average is calculated by adding points from Phase I of the BetPlay DIMAYOR I League 2023 to Phase I of BetPlay DIMAYOR II 2023, then dividing by the total matches in Phase I of BetPlay I 2023 and BetPlay DIMAYOR II 2023.
• For Unión Magdalena, the average combines points from Phase I of BetPlay DIMAYOR I and II 2022 with Phase I of BetPlay DIMAYOR I and II 2023, divided by the total Phase I matches in BetPlay DIMAYOR I and II 2022 and 2023.
• For the other clubs, the average is formed by summing points from Phase I All Against All across BetPlay I 2021, BetPlay II 2021, BetPlay I 2022, BetPlay II 2022, BetPlay I 2023, and BetPlay II 2023, then dividing by the total Phase I All Against All matches in those same campaigns.
Note: The 2023 relegation averages are reported with two decimal places, for example 1.14.

As of the 11th matchday of BetPlay League 2023 I, five clubs remain deeply committed to staying in the top tier: Unión Magdalena, Alianza Petrolera, Once Caldas, Deportivo Cali, and Atlético Huila.

WHICH CLUBS PROMOTE TO THE BETPLAY 2024 LEAGUE?
Meanwhile, during the 11th round of the All Against All phase in BetPlay 2023, the field narrows to eight teams that advance to the Quadrangulars semifinals after sixteen regular fixtures.
The two Quadrangular winners will face off at the end of the first half of the year. The champion earns the earliest route to promotion, with the possibility of repeating a title in the second semester or winning the Grand Final of 2023.
According to the championship rules, the promotion formats for 2024 are as follows:
Clubs participating in the BetPlay DIMAYOR 2023 tournament may be promoted to the First Division by 2024 under these conditions:
1. If the BetPlay DIMAYOR I 2023 Tournament Champion Club is the same as the BetPlay DIMAYOR II 2023 Tournament Champion Club.
2. The 2023 BetPlay DIMAYOR Grand Final.
3. The Grand Final Loser and the Top Seeded Reclassification Table of Tournaments I and II BetPlay DIMAYOR 2023.
4. The BetPlay DIMAYOR 2023 Repechage Tournament.
