The largest Russian traffic exchange point MSK-IX has lost its Netflix and Microsoft CDN servers. Evgeny Morozov, general manager of MSK-IX, spoke about this. Companies have removed their servers, which could reduce the speed of data transfer within the country.

These aren’t the only companies that have decided to remove CDN servers from the country, Morozov said, but he didn’t specify who else did that. At the same time, he noted that access to the services of companies is not lost, although there may be speed problems. Morozov noted that “a very slight increase in the number of access violations” should be expected.
The CDN technology itself or “content delivery network” allows users to quickly access certain data. Simply put, CDN allows you to download data not from the main server, which may be far away from the user, but from its local “mirror”.
In this case, the number of hops between the server and the user is reduced, so that the data transfer rate drops slightly. This is especially important for services that allow you to watch online videos or download large amounts of data.
