The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has decided not to allow Belarusian tennis player Viktoria Azarenka to participate in an exhibition match before the start of the US Open. This was reported on Twitter by journalist Ben Rothenberg, citing a press release from the tournament.
The Belarusian athlete was supposed to take part in the exhibition match “Tennis for Peace”, which will be held on Wednesday.
Azarenka is a strong player. We appreciate your willingness to participate. “Given the sensitivity of the Ukrainian tennis players and the ongoing situation, we are confident that this is the right course of action for us.”
old edition of Mirror reportedHe said US Open organizers are considering the possibility of removing Russian tennis players from participating in the tournament.
Recall that in April the organizers of Wimbledon refused the admission of Russian and Belarusian tennis players to the competition. In addition, players from these countries are banned from participating in turf tournaments in England under the auspices of the LTA.
A month before the start of the tournament, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced that they would not award points to Wimbledon participants due to the non-admission of Russians and Belarusians. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) also joined them.
