Natalia Prokofieva, Secretary General of the Latvian Gymnastics Federation, commented on the decision of rhythmic gymnast Elizaveta Polstyana to refuse to play for the Latvian national team and return to Russia, reports TASS.
According to Polstyana, she had to renounce her Russian passport (the gymnast has dual citizenship), otherwise she will be completely banned from competing, including at the 2022 World Championships, which will be held in Bulgaria from September 12-18. The gymnast officially refused to continue her career for the Latvian national team and returned to Russia.
“We didn’t expect such a reaction from Elizabeth, so it’s a pity that her emotions overpowered common sense in this situation. We have done everything to find a reasonable compromise on our part. Be that as it may, the final decision was made by himself, ”said Prokofieva.
19-year-old Polstyanaya is a native of Latvia, but has been playing for the country’s national team only since 2018. Last spring, he was banned from studying in Russia.
Previously reported on the Latvian portal La.lv appeared Article under the heading “Rhythmic gymnast Elizaveta Polstyanaya is confused in translation.” The author of the article, Gints Narogs, believes that the athlete of Russian origin, who has competed for Latvia since 2018, misunderstood the message of the Latvian Olympic Association.
