Washington Capitals won the National Hockey League’s regular season game at home, defeating the New York Rangers 7:4. Capitals’ Russian captain Alexander Ovechkin, who recently returned from a broken ankle and had previously scored two goals in three games, recorded a goal and an assist. Moreover, while goal number eight was the winning goal, Tom Wilson’s assist into the empty goal in the last position eliminated all questions about the victory.

Thanks to the next goal, Ovechkin narrowed the gap to Wayne Gretzky, who holds the NHL regular championship sniper record (894 goals), to 22 goals. Ovi is scoring 0.83 goals per game this season, which is the best figure in the entire league.

In addition, Ovechkin moved into a clear 12th place among all-time scorers in regular season history with 1,580 points, surpassing star defenseman Ray Bourque, who spent nearly his entire career with the Boston Bruins and was also traded at the trade deadline. He continued his career last season with the Colorado Avalanche and won the Stanley Cup with it. Eleventh on the list of all-time scorers, Phil Esposito is ten points ahead of Alexander the Great.

Previously the best hockey player of the 21st century repeated Ovechkin’s success.
