Major browser developers have banded together to form a new organization, the Browser Choice Alliance, aimed at countering Microsoft’s alleged anti-competitive practices. The alliance includes representatives from Opera, Vivaldi, Chrome, Wavebox and Waterfox, who want to protect users’ right to choose and use their favorite browser on the Windows platform.
According to the Browser Choice Alliance, Microsoft uses its dominant position in the operating system market to limit competition. Among the claims:
- problems loading third-party browsers;
- automatic installation of Edge as default browser after Windows updates;
- mandatory opening of links of Microsoft services such as Teams and Outlook via Edge;
- Strong recommendations to use Edge.
The organization calls on regulators, including the European Commission, to intervene in the situation. Specifically, the alliance demands that the Edge browser be recognized as a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Google’s participation in the alliance has led to mixed reactions. Despite the accusations against Microsoft, the company itself has been repeatedly criticized for the dominance of the Chrome browser, which occupies a large portion of the market. The American authorities have been demanding for years that Google sell this product, which makes its position in the alliance less convincing.
Browser Choice Alliance plans to continue fighting for consumer rights and pushing for changes in Microsoft policies. However, the participation of giants like Google adds an element of irony to the situation, calling into question the alliance’s true motives.
