Intel and AMD have announced an unexpected collaboration aimed at strengthening the position of x86 architecture in the face of growing competition from Arm chipsets. The companies have joined forces to create a new alliance, the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group, which will develop and support the x86 ecosystem while simplifying software development and improving platform compatibility.
According to Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, the fragility of x86’s market dominance requires collaboration with major players such as AMD, Google, Microsoft and Lenovo. AMD CEO Lisa Tzwu-Fang Su emphasized that collaboration with Intel will allow us to jointly develop innovative solutions for future generations of processors.
The new alliance aims to eliminate duplicate functions and outdated commands in the x86 architecture, which will simplify development and accelerate the adoption of new technologies, especially in the field of artificial intelligence. It is expected that the first fruits of this collaboration will only be visible in a year’s time.
Previously, the companies merged to work together in 2018. Then Intel and AMD temporarily teamed up to create a line of Intel Kaby Lake G processors. They combine Intel Core i5/i7 chips and AMD Radeon Vega M GH and GL mobile graphics
