Rostelecom’s senior vice president for information technology, Dariy Khalitov, said the Russians may face a complete blockage of Google services. According to him, Android device users may lose most of their usual features, including Google Drive and Gmail. Khalitov emphasized that this applies to all foreign services on which the daily use of smartphones depends.
Khalitov paid special attention to the importance of Google Mobile Services (GMS), which form the basis for the operation of many applications, such as taxi and delivery services. He also noted that a possible block could deprive users of push notifications, which is especially critical for banking applications.
The slowdown of YouTube in Russia, which began in July 2024, has already become the first sign of technological limitations. Khalitov added that YouTube and other services can be blocked if desired, which will lead to serious problems for Android smartphone users.
