The new FidelityFX Super Resolution 4.0 (FSR 4.0) scaling technology will be based entirely on artificial intelligence algorithms, according to AMD representatives, which promises significant improvements in the energy efficiency of GPUs.
Work on FSR 4.0 began about a year ago and focuses on improving battery life for handheld gaming devices. The current versions of FSR 2 and 3 used analytics generation, but with FSR 4.0 AMD moves to AI frame generation and interpolation, which should significantly improve battery life.
A major goal of the technology is to allow users to game longer on a single charge, which is one of the most common complaints from consumers. The new technology also aims to optimize the performance of GPUs, which could influence the future development of portable consoles like Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go.
AMD hasn’t yet revealed an exact release timeline for FSR 4.0 or support for other devices, such as laptops with Strix Point processors. The company is confident that the new API can be ready for release in the near future, but full implementation and gaming support may take some time.
