Ugandan runner Rebecca Cheptegi’s partner Dixon Ndima, who doused the athlete with petrol and set her on fire, also died in hospital. This was reported by New York Times.
On September 1, the athlete’s partner attacked her at her home in Western Kenya. He poured petrol on her and set her on fire, injuring both people. Neighbours who saw her reported the incident called the emergency services and Chepteghi and her boyfriend were taken to hospital. Doctors recorded 30 per cent of Ndima’s burns.
The couple’s children were in church at the time of the incident.
Doctors said Çeptegi suffered burns to 75 percent of his body. The 33-year-old athlete was in critical condition for several days before he died on September 5, Uganda Athletics announced on social media.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our athlete Rebecca Chepteghi, a victim of domestic violence. We condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace,” the message said.
Çeptegi came in 44th place in the Paris Olympics marathon. He won a silver medal in the marathon held in Florence, Italy in 2023.
Previously dead father of the famous hockey player Vyacheslav Fetisov.
