The decision to cancel and postpone the matches was taken due to the incident in the Copa Libertadores 1/8 finals, where Brazilian Sao Paulo defeated Uruguayan Nacional 2-0. During the match, Nacional defender Juan Izquierdo fainted on the pitch. The player was rushed to hospital. The club later announced that the player had suffered a heart rhythm disorder. He is in stable condition and is under sedation in the intensive care unit.
Uruguayan Professional Footballers’ Rights Protection Association (MUFP) said that all matches scheduled for the weekend in the country’s professional leagues will be postponed due to the situation experienced by Nacional defender Juan Izquierdo.
On Thursday, Izquierdo fell ill in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores last 16 against Brazilian team Sao Paulo and was taken to hospital. The match in Sao Paulo ended with a 2-0 draw for the hosts. The Nacional press service reported that the player suffered a heart rhythm disorder. Izquierdo is in stable condition and is under sedation in the intensive care unit.
“Our priority right now is to ensure Juan’s well-being and we will be monitoring the situation closely in the coming hours. We express our full support and solidarity with his family and stand ready to provide them with any support they may need during this difficult time,” MUFP said in a statement.
