Famous Russian skater and coach Evgeni Plushenko commented on the decision to end the career of two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu.
The Japanese skater announced this on July 19.
“Today I learned that my good friend, elite figure skater, and the biggest star in figure skating history, Yuzuru Hanyu, announced his retirement. I appreciate everything he does for figure skating.
I wish him the best in his professional career. And I hope he makes people all over the world happy with his performances on the show. Good luck in the future my friend Yuzuru-san,” Plushenko wrote on social media.
Hanyu is a two-time Olympic champion at the Games in Sochi and Pyeongchang. The same number of times that the Japanese took the gold of the world championships.
In the 2021/22 season, Hanyu missed several Grand Prix events due to an ankle injury. At the end of December last year, he participated in the Japan Championship, where he won both the short and free programs, becoming the Japanese champion for the sixth time in his career. This allowed him to go to the Olympic Games in Beijing.
At the 2022 Olympics, the Japanese in the short program were unable to perform a quad salchow, thus placing eighth after the short program. As a result, the 27-year-old skater finished fourth and featured two compatriots Shomu Uno and Yuma Kagiyama, as well as winner Neyten Chen. The best of the Russians was Evgeny Semenenko (eighth place).
In March, Hanyu also missed the World Championships in Montpellier due to injury.
